Question:
I have an Dexter actuator where the lid keeps popping off it is in a sealed box and on the actuator it says need to be an open-air could this be the problem or does that not matter just keeps popping off from vibration in travel

Expert Reply:
Dexter DX Series Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator # K71-651 should be mounted in an open space to allow cooling as you drive. This is why the casing has small heat-sink ribs. These provide a little extra surface area for improved heat radiation. Although this unit and your # HBA-CAM wiring adapter look very well protected in your trailer box this placement does not appear to allow enough air flow.
Since the cap has popped off more than once, it may no longer have the same retention strength as when it was new so you might want to both enable some air flow for cooling and install a new filler cap # K71-685-00.
Vibration might be a contributing factor so if you have some rubber or foam rubber material you can place between the actuator and the mounting point that would certainly do no harm. If so, you could do the same thing for the HBA-CAM electrical adapter.
