Use of Snow Tire Chains on my 2006 LEXUS RX330 AWD

Published 12/14/2011

Question:

I am planning on carring chains for a winter trip to the Smokies as a precaution if we were to need them. My Lexus is an all wheel drive and wondered if it is sufficent to just put chains on the front tires only or do you need them on both front and back axles because of how the AWD works. The manual says to put them on the front Im sure do to the weight advantage but will that effect the AWD capability. Thank you.

You would want to have snow tire chains on all the powered drive wheels of your 2006 Lexus RX330, but you also want to follow the guidelines of the vehicle manufacturer. Having the chains on the front will be beneficial since the front axle is a powered drive axle. Also with chains on the front wheels, there is an increase in steering stability and braking.

Your Lexus should have 225/65-17 size tires. For tire chains for your Lexus, I would recommend the Thule XB16 Tire Chains, part # TH01571245. These chains are much easier to install over traditional tire chains and Thule offers an industry leading 5 year warranty.

When using snow chains on a vehicle, it is recommended to follow the vehicle manufacturer guidelines stated in the owners manual. Not doing so can cause damage to the vehicle and which may not be covered under warranty.

I have linked an FAQ on snow tire chains that you may find as a good reference. Also linked is a video review of the Thule Tire Chains, part # TH01571245.
