Question:
I recently bought a used dual axle 1997 Lamar trailer, 16ft. with brakes on the rear axle. The brakes did not work, cut lines, but the electromagnets did not seem to meet the specs from your site. I have a vin on a title, but can find no markings on the trailer. A rear bearing failed completely on the braked axle. The spindle is marred pretty badly. I suspect I will need to replace the axle. There are no markings on the axle either, and the bearings and grease seal have different numbers on each hub?! So I do not trust they are correct bearings. Here are all the measurements I can supply. Please help me determine my best course of action and what parts needed. Drum/hub markings and measurements: max diameter 10.090 C286 AL-KO 7230 W-2 5 bolt 10inch x 4 1/2inch 2inch spindle hole axle: 2 3/8inch diameter hub face to hub face 92 1/8? mid shackle to mid shackle 74 spindle measurements: backing plate to grease seal lip 1.5inch length next is a tapered shoulder .5inch long 1and 11/16inch - 1and 9/16inch diameter next shoulder is 1and 3/8 or 1 and 1/2 long by 1 3/8 diameter next shoulder is 9/16inch long x 1 and 1/16inch diameter threads are 1inch long x 1inch diameter

Thank you for these measurements! I would have to concur with you that your best option would be to replace the entire axle. It sounds like you have two 3,500 lb axles with a hub face close to 95" end to end. The hub face is measured from the outer edge of each hub where the wheel would sit (see photo). I recommend you take a look at the Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes part # 7359765-EB which has a hub face to hub face measurement of 95" and a spring center to spring center measurement of 80". The hube face will need to be close to what you have now but the spring center can be moved to match your trailer so that is not as big of a deal.
If the other axle you have now on your trailer does not match the exact dimensions above then it will need to be replaced as well so you don't have any tracking issues. If you want to stick with the same setup you had (brakes in back, idler hubs up front) then you can use the Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Idler Hubs part # 7359765-I for the front axle and the Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes part # 7359765-EB for the rear axle.
The two brand new axles are going to eliminate a lot of future headaches you have with repairs to your old bearings. They also have easy access grease fittings on the end so you can keep up with maintenance. Please note that when replacing your axles you will need new u-bolts as well for which I recommend using part # APUBR-1. You will need one for each axle.
