Question:
would you recommend cables or chains for a 2015 Ford Explorer AWD? I have 245/60/18 tires. The manual says dont use chains however I heard the last few years Ford said low profile chains were ok.

Chains are the better choice compared to cables. They offer more traction and usually last longer than other options. Owner's manuals normally say do not use chains on certain vehicles because of limited wheel well clearance. We do offer Class S chains for the 2015 Ford Explorer's 245/60-18 tires. Class S chains are designed for vehicles with restricted clearance and are designed to take up less space.
I recommend Class S Titan Alloy snow chains part # TC2317 because the diamond pattern provides more tire coverage for better traction in the snow compared to ladder style chains. I have installed these chains and the installation is easy because of the integrated tensionsers. I have attached a video of an installation on a 2014 Ford Explorer. You only need one set of chains on the rear tires of the Ford since it is AWD.
To use a Class S chain you need a minimum of 1.46 inches between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well. You also need at least .59 inches between the tire's sidewall and the Ford Explorer itself. I have attached a diagram for your reference.
