Why Do Some Trailer Tires Have 2 Load Ratings
Published 02/22/2019 >
Question:
how can a tire have 2 load ratings?
asked by: Doug
Expert Reply:
Certain trailer tires will indeed have two maximum load ratings, such as with the Westlake ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range G Item # WE76FR. This is because the tire will have a slightly different weight rating when it is used in a dually setup as opposed to a single tire (on one side of the axle) setup.
The load capacity will usually be a bit less when used as a dually tire because with this setup the two tires will always wear a bit differently because of shifting weight and varying loads.
The mentioned Westlake tire features a 4,080 pound maximum load at 1100 psi as a single tire and a 3,640 pound maximum load at 110 psi as a dual tire.
