Installing New LED Trailer Lights for Combined Wiring on Semi Tractor with Separate Wiring

Published 12/21/2018

Question:

I am wiring a flatbed semi trailer and I replaced all the lights with LEDs. The brake lights have 3 leads, “tail light”, “Turn/Brake/Reverse light” and ground. The image I am looking at shows the round 7 pin with a different prong for turn lights and brake lights. How do I go about making sure both functions work with only 1 wire on the light that needs to go two places?

Expert Reply:

Since the heavy-duty 7-Way round pin connector on your trailer uses separate pins/wires for the brake lights and turn signals you will want to add a converter like the Roadmaster # RM-732 between the mid-ship lights on the semi trailer (if equipped) and the new LED lights you are installing.

If the turn signal wires from the 7-Way on your trailer run to the mid ship lights you will need to "T" off from there to the converter on each side (green wire on the converter for Right Turn and yellow wire on converter for Left Turn). The brake light wire from the 7-Way will also be run to the converter (red wire).

The converter will combine these circuits to the stop/turn wires that your new LED tail lights are designed to connect to.
