Recommended Trailer Brake Controller for 2018 GMC Canyon
Published 11/29/2018 >
Question:
I want to install a trailer brake controller in my Canyon. I have the factory 7-way on the rear bumper but I do not see one of those connection ports under the dash. What do I do to install a controller in my truck?

The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 is easy to recommend because of its proven track record of reliability and because of its easy setup and operation. The P3 also allows more flexible installation on your dash since it can be oriented at any vertical angle. It also feature a large clear LCD display for easy viewing of messages and it even stores multiple braking power settings to let you call up the one you need for any specific condition, such as long downhill grades.
The P3 is compatible with both electric drum brakes and electric-over-hydraulic (EOH) actuator setups. If you want a proven performer, to "buy it once and buy it right", then go for the P3.

Your 2018 GMC Canyon does not have a brake controller port under the dash the way other similar pickups do but it is still simple enough to install a trailer brake controller. You'll just need to make 4 spliced wire connections using the included pigtail and butt connectors instead of plugging in an adapter. The pigtail will connect to wiring that is behind the driver-side kick panel. This does save you the added cost of an adapter.
The wiring connections from the controller to the vehicle are as follows:
Controller Wire Vehicle Wire
12V Power (Black) Red with Green Tracer
Brake Signal (Red) White with Blue Tracer
Ground (White) Black
Output (Blue) Blue
