Recommended Towing Components for 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Without Trailer Hitch, Wiring, or Controller

Updated 11/05/2018 | Published 11/04/2018

Question:

I plan to install a complete towing package in a new Hyundai Santa Fe I am picking up tomorrow. The SUV includes the Trailer Prep Package but without the factory hitch and electrical connections. I have the following eTrailer items in my cart: ** Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2inch - 75776 ** Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package - 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56332 ** Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole and 4 Pole w/Test Lamps - C57674 ** Tekonsha Prodigy RF Wireless Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 3 Axles - Proportional - TK94FR You folks offer some really killer installation videos so it all looks quite straightforward. The only open issue is providing the direct-to-battery 12V to the 7-pole connector. Since I am using an RF wireless brake controller, I dont need to bring the controller signal back from a unit in the cab. Rather than pulling a 12V wire from the battery, I was hoping to grab 12V from the Trailer Prep package in the back of the vehicle. My thinking is that this factory unit must be providing 12V from the battery since your product video for the wiring harness # C56332 specifically mentions that the Modulite sp? power module is directly connected to the battery to avoid overloading the vehicles electrical system which means its getting 12V from the Hyundai Trailer Prep package. Is my assessment correct? If so, I envision splicing in another wire to pick up the 12V that your harness is pulling from battery and take it to the 12V blade on the 7-pole connector. Lacking the car and your kit, I can't do any testing but wanted to check before I ordered all the parts. Could you identify which wire in your harness has the 12V from the battery? Thanks. P.S. My order will also include a mounting bracket and dielectric grease.

For your 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe, the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 75776 you chose is an excellent option. It will be an easy installation using the existing weld nuts and the hardware that comes with the hitch receiver. I've attached the installation details to assist.

For your wiring, the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package - 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56332 is the best fit and will connect to the factory tow package wiring harness located along the frame rail at the rear of your vehicle. I've attached a video to assist. Using dielectric grease # 11755 is a wise option when connecting harnesses.

You can then add the 4 to 7 way adapter like Curt Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole and 4 Pole w/Test Lamps # C57674. This harness will use the black wire for power and the white wire for ground. The yellow is for reverse light if desired and the blue is for brake controller output if desired. This adapter comes with the bracket you referenced for mounting.

Finally, the Tekonsha Prodigy RF Wireless Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 3 Axles - Proportional # TK94FR is an option as is a standard style controller like # 90195 if you prefer but that will require also running the wires into the cab of your vehicle to your dash using # 5506.

It is not recommended to tap into the 12V power wire on the harness as it isn't intended for using a 7-way with 12V power. You will want to run # 10-1-1 wire from the black wire on the adapter to a 40 amp circuit breaker like # 9510 and then to the positive battery terminal.

Finally, for a ball mount, I recommend the B&W # BWTS10033B which will give you two integrated hitch balls and the ability to cleanly stow it when not in use.

You did a great job determining parts. Let me know if you have further questions.
