For your 2015 Jeep Compass, I recommend using the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13172. This hitch is a custom fit for your Compass and installs using pre-drilled holes in the frame rail which you can see in the attached video. It has a class III rating with a 2" receiver tube opening. The width of the frame brackets is also right at 36" wide.

However, the width which is what I assume the 36" measurement you are referring to is not used to determine the fit of a trailer hitch as there are several other factors involved such as the shape of the frame and spacing of bolts. This is why nearly all trailer hitch receivers on the market are a custom fit. Even if the trailer hitch you have has the same width of your Jeep the odds of it being able to work are very low. This is why you need to use a custom fit trailer hitch like the one listed above.
