How to Determine Axle Weight Rating of Old Boat Trailer with Worn Label

Question:

I have an old boat trailer that has it weight capacity label worn to nothing. Can you send me a link/table that shows what the capacity of the trailer is based on axle diameter/bolt patterns/springs/etc.

Yes, the Typical Axle Diameters Based on Axle Capacity are as follows:

1,000-lb - 2,000-lb Axles: 1-1/2 inch - 1-3/4 inch diameter
3,500-lb Axles: 2-3/8 inch diameter
5,200-lb - 7,200-lb Axles: 3 inch diameter

If you have a 3" diameter axle then you will want to check the axle itself. In about the middle of the axle it should have a stamp indicating the weight rating of the unit. Other than that it can be a little difficult to guess the weight rating of an older trailer since there wasn't a standard for weight capacities until the recent past.

We also have a bearing FAQ that I linked for you to reference. If you pull your hub you can note the bearings that you have which will be a good indicator of the axle weight capacity.

Let me know what your bolt pattern, and axle diameter is and I can try to help you determine the correct weight rating for your axle. Please note that the weight rating of the axle(s) could be higher than the actual weight rating of the trailer itself. You can also contact the trailer manufacturer with your VIN if the trailer still has the original axle(s) on it and they should be able to help you out with that.
