The Tekonsha Primus IQ # TK90160 actually will enter sleep mode after about 20 - 30 minutes of inactivity when your vehicle is shut off. If you go and check it after your vehicle has been sitting for awhile you should see that it is turned off but just look through the window as opening your door could cause it to sense movement and wake back up.
I spoke with my contact about the PL code you are seeing and he said that the controller shows that code when the red wire receives power before the black wire. He said to start off by making sure you have the pigtail connected to the following functions:
Blue - 7-Way Output to Trailer
Black - 12V Power
White - Ground
Red - COLD Side of Stop Light Switch (only gets hot when brake pedal is pressed)
If everything is installed correctly then I would try testing the red and black wires at the same time. The black should have constant power while the red should only have power with your brake pedal pressed.
