Troubleshooting Trailer Brakes that Show Short Error Message with P3 Brake Controller
Question:
I am receiving the error message, “ shorted, no brakes”. I have a 3 axle trailer with new 6000 # Dexter Axles and brakes on all three axles. I read a previous customers same question and your response. Current draw to each axle when power is applied is 7 amps. I am using a fluke meter in series at each axles power source. The vehicle is a 2004 Excursion with all factory unmodified wiring. Sincerley

The short can be on the connectors of the trailer and truck. Check there for any bent pins or corrosion and fix as needed. It can be in the wiring leading to the brake magnets, the brake magnets themselves, or a bad ground on an electric brake system as well.
I recommend using a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to test your wiring functions and probing the wiring insulation every few feet to determine the short. Then replace that portion of wire with # 10-1-1.
