The Fold-Down Gooseneck Hitch Installation Template, # 6425, is not absolutely necessary. The instructions for the Reese Fold-Down Gooseneck Trailer Hitches, like part # 8339, provide the dimensions needed for drilling holes and cutting out the center area of the bed to allow the ball to fold down below the surface. The metal template does significantly ease the installation of the gooseneck hitch though.
There is no welding required for installation of the Reese Fold-Down gooseneck hitch, or any of the gooseneck hitches that we stock.
Our best selling gooseneck is the Reese Hide-A-Goose Underbed Gooseneck, # 9460. This hitch only requires cutting a 4 inch hole in the bed of the truck and we have a video installation that should help, see link.
If you would like to send me the year, make, model and bed length of your truck, I would be glad to make a gooseneck hitch recommendation for you.
