How to Choose an Axle to Replace Torsion Axle on a 1999 Bantam Travel Trailer

Published 08/08/2018

Question:

We have a 1999 Bantam Trail lite 17 ft hybrid travel trailer. The axle is bent in two places. We are conaidering changing from the torsion axle to a spring rode axle. What ia the hub face measurement we would need to order a spring ride axle? Have you any experience or thoughts on this kind of repair?

I do have a way for you to measure for an axle on your 1999 Bantam trailer. The hub-face measurement (A) would be the same as what you have now and the spring-center measurement (B) is taken from the center of one side of your trailer frame to the center of the exact opposite side of the frame.

The spring-center is where your leaf springs will be hanging. Since axles like the Dexter # 35545I-ST-89 have the spring seats already welded on it is important to have an accurate spring-center measurement.

After you know these measurements it is just a matter of installing a suspension kit like # APS4 with a leaf spring like # e57SR.

We also carry the Timbren Axle-Less Suspension Systems like part # A35RS545 which eliminate the need for all of the extra parts and are actually much easier to install.

I have attached some videos and helpful articles to assist in the location of the axle on your trailer as well.
