Can a Single Attachment Point B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch be Used with a Sidewinder Pin Box
Updated 07/30/2018 | Published 07/27/2018 >
Question:
I bought a 2105 Ram 3500 - 6’ bed with ram boxes. In 2017 I purchased a Columbus Compass Forest River fifth wheel - Just under 14,000 GVW. The Colorado dealer installed a BandW Companion hitch with a turnover ball, single point connection. I do not have additional four factory attachments at the corners. On my fifth wheel they installed a sidewinder kingpin setup. I have been towing in this configuration over a year with out any problems. My friend purchase the same truck and camper last week and his dealer told him my setup was dangerous? They are recommending the companion “slider” on his truck. Do I have to get my BandW companion replaced to something similiar? His truck does not have RAM boxes on the sides. They said the slider might not work with the RAM boxes. With this fresh information, I am unsure of what I need to do to tow safely? ANy suggestions on the right way to go would be appreciated! Thank you!

You actually shouldn't be using a B&W Companion hitch with a Sidewinder at all. The problem is because of the single attachment point and the force applied to the hitch from the Sidewinder it could cause the gooseneck hitch under the bed to get damaged or even break free causing the whole assembly, including the Companion, to rotate.
The only difference between the regular Companion and slider is that the slider can slide back to allow more clearance between the truck and trailer when turning. Since you can't slide a hitch back and use a Sidewinder at the same time there would be no benefit if you were to go with the slider version.
We have a tech bulletin from Reese, manufacturer of the Sidewinder, on this exact topic which I have linked for you.
Basically you would need to remove the gooseneck hitch in your 2015 Ram 3500 and install a standard rail kit, # RP50085-58. Then use hitch # RP30928 adjusted to the highest position and you would need to hook up and disconnect only on level ground. This is the only Reese approved way to tow a 5th wheel trailer with a Sidewinder.
