Brake Hand Winch to Replace 1500-lb-Rated Shelby 5352

Updated 06/29/2024 | Published 06/26/2018

Question:

On my Shelby model 5352 1500# winch with auto brakes, my crank handle just unscrews instead of the boat trailer lowering. Can you advise?

Some Shelby winch models used a handle that secured to the winch with an Allen key. If this is the type you have then it is possible that the set screw or the post on the winch the handle attaches to is stripped or worn to the point that the handle can no longer crank the winch.

While we don't have a repair kit for your Shelby 5352 winch we do have a great replacement winch to match what you have since it is a 1,500 lb brake winch. For that you'd want the Dutton Lainson 1,500 lb Winch Part # DL14996. This has a freewheeling lever for easy feed in and out and has an automatic brake mechanism as well.

With this winch you can use 25-foot strap # DL24249 or 50-foot cable # DL24104.

Can a wheel be attached instead of the crank handle?

@Wheaty You would have to have a custom made wheel using the handle for the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14996. Since this winch has the automatic brake it needs the collar of the handle for the shaft and Dutton-Lainson does not have a wheel option.
