Things to Consider When Changing to a Different Tire Size on a Trailer

Updated 09/06/2011 | Published 09/04/2011

Question:

I have 5.70-8 B grade tires on my trailer now I got some new tires and got 4.80 - 8 C grade tires I realize theyll fit my trailer and from my research they seem to have about 45 lbs more capacity old tires 715 lbs new 760 lbs Im curious if the greater width and height of the 5.70 is and advantage or is it just the load capacity I should worry about? I can take these tires back but they are cheaper than the b grade 5.70-8 thanks

When considering a different size tire for a trailer there are a couple different things to think about.

The first thing to consider is clearance. With a smaller tire you might end up with more clearance in the wheel well, but you might end up with the trailer being too low to the ground. You could potentially drag the rear of the trailer while driving through a valley or going up a hill.

Another thing to consider is how the height of the tires will affect the sway of the trailer. A taller tire can potentially cause the trailer to sway more due to the taller sidewall.

As long as you do not have clearance issues with the smaller tire you should have no problem using the smaller tire on your trailer.

Regardless of which size you pick you will always want to have the tires filled to their maximum psi so the tires will perform and wear at their best and give you the best possible gas mileage.

I attached a couple FAQ articles on tire sizes for you to check out also.
