Can Same Size Wheels and Tires be Used When Using an Over/Under Kit?

Updated 05/05/2020 | Published 04/23/2018

Question:

Hello, I have a 2004 Rockwood Freedom tent trailer and I am deciding on an axle flip to increase clearance. However tires need to be replaced. Do you know what tire / wheel options would be available if the axle were to be flipped, or is it a matter of flipping the axle and then seeing what will fit? Thanks,

"Flipping the axle" is just an expression that is used for an over/under kit but nothing happens to the axle so there is no need for a different size of wheel and tire than you currently have. What these kits actually do is move the trailer's leaf springs to the top of your axle; the trailer gets raised approximately the same amount as your axle's diameter plus the height of the leaf spring pack.

In regards to an over/under kit, you will need # K71-384-00 for a 2-3/8" round axle or # K71-385-00 for a 3" round axle.

I've added links to video reviews of these kits for you to check out as well as a link to our selection of wheel/tire combos for you to look at if you do happen to need new ones, or you can let me know your wheel's size and bolt pattern, as well as the size and load range of tire you need and I'd be happy to give you some options.

Just need clarification. I have a 2011 Apex 22QBS. Id like to lift doing a conversion kit. Camper has tandem axles. I see kits for 2 and 3 axles, but I do not see one for TANDEM AXLES. Am I correct in saying that I need TWO KITS? Also, I do not weld, but would like to do conversion at home. Is it safe to do conversion at home, then tow trailer to shop to have it welded to axle?

You're correct - for a tandem axle setup you'll just need two Over-Under Conversion Kits. I would try to have somebody with experience come over to your place and weld those spring seats on when it's time. I don't recommend towing it anywhere until everything is in place.
