Do Torsion Axles Move Up and Down or No Movement at All
Updated 04/10/2018 | Published 04/09/2018 >
Question:
I have a 2010 5-Starr dual axle trailer gross weith 6300lbs. with a downward facing bow in each axle and the actual wheel hub about 6” further back than the axle itself and at about a 120 degree angle ie, at about the 4 o’clock position. Does this axle move up and down at all ie, is there a spring in the main axle body that lets it flex a little. And if “yes”, how much movement can it make? I ask because I replaced the brakes with the same “model” as the originals, but it bolts on the axle differently. Now the 14” flexible brake hose is up close to the I-beam and I’m concerned that if the “swept-back” wheel hub moves up and down more than an inch, the hose might rub/press against the I-beam and rupture.

Sounds like your trailer may have torsion axles which means the main body of the axle does not move up and down. If instead the axle uses leaf springs for suspension then the whole axle does move up and down. If you are unsure you can send me a picture of the axle near the hub and I'll take a look.
