Helpful Expert Reply:
Typically trailer brakes are recommended when the gross trailer weight (loaded and ready for a trip), is greater than 1/2 of the vehicle's weight, or over 2,500 pounds. Based on my research, it looks like your Kia Sorento can weigh between 3,700 and 4,100 pounds, depending on the exact model. Since your trailer features a maximum weight of 1,700 pounds, brakes are not technically needed, as this falls short of 50% of the vehicle's weight.
Just note that even if brakes aren't needed, they will still provide a great benefit. Without trailer brakes, you are relying on your Sorento to stop both itself and the trailer, which can put a lot of stress on the vehicle over time. You can also take the trailer out for a couple test drives just to see how it handles without brakes and make a decision at that point. If you do decide to install them, I have attached a great article that walks you through everything that will be needed.
If you can tell me the model year of your Kia Sorento, I will be happy to recommend a trailer hitch and wiring (if you do not already have them) so that you can tow your trailer. I have also included a couple of articles on trailer towing that you might find helpful.
