Recommended Safety Chains for New Coupler and 1/2 Inch Bolts
Updated 03/07/2018 | Published 03/06/2018 >
Question:
I am installing a new coupler on my utility trailer. How do I attach the safety chain? My bolts are 1/2inch OD on the threads, but my old 3/16inch chain wont fit over it. What chains, or attachment hardware do you have to make my chain fit?

Expert Reply:
For a 1/2 inch bolt, you will normally need a chain that has a 5/16 inch link diameter like # 49150. To utilize your current chains, I recommend simply changing your hardware and using Grade 8 bolts that fit your chains using the largest size that will fit your links with appropriate washers and locknuts. This will obviously require drilling additional holes.
