What is the small flip up parts on this head do and are they important ? I recently got a Reese hitch and there is nothing where those flip up pieces are on your part.

The Curt Replacement Weight Distribution Head for Trunnion Style Bars # C17307 is the only system like this that Curt has. Those are spring loaded clips that keep the trunnion bars in place. If you want a different style of trunnion bar head, Curt has moved more to the TruTrack version like # C17509, # C17507, or # C17506 depending on the weight capacity of your system.
Most systems have another attachment method, so if your system doesn't have them, it is not an issue.
