Selecting Replacement Leaf Springs for Enclosed Trailer

Updated 03/01/2018 | Published 02/28/2018

Question:

I am replacing work out springs on an enclosed trailer. I need 4000 pound springs and the existing spring hangers are 25 inches from the center of the bolt holes not accounting for the additional length from the shackles. What length spring would be the best choice for the replacement? Thanks.

Leaf springs stretch with use and age and to make sure you match their length, as well as their capacity, you will want to pull one out of the trailer's suspension so you can measure its eye-to-eye length. A well-used spring can stretch as much as 1/2-inch from its original length.

If your hanger hole spacing is 25-inches on center then you may well need a 25-1/4-inch like # e57SR but the length of your shackles comes into play too. The spring eye dimension should be longer than your hanger hole spacing, as shown on the linked image.

It is also a good idea to confirm on the axle's sticker what its weight rating is. Then click on that capacity on the linked page for leaf springs and choose the appropriate length based on your original spring.
