Correct Weight Distribution System for Trailer With 750 lb Dry Tongue Weight and 7,500 lb GVWR

Question:

Looking at Reese Strait-line WD with Sway Control. My Trailer says 755 Tounge Weight, and 7478 GVWR. I click on 800lbs in the search... and it gives me RP66084. Is that The correct setup?

Based on the numbers you gave, the Reese Strait-Line # RP66084 is likely going to be the right system for you, but you are going to need to make sure by figuring your total tongue weight (TTW), which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. The TTW is typically between 10% and 15% of your trailer's GVWR but you'll want to verify your TTW to make sure # RP66084 will work for you.

To determine this you can use a scale such as the etrailer # e99044 or by using one of the methods outlined in the help article on determining tongue weight I've linked for you. From there, simply add on the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your vehicle and you'll have your TTW. The ideal system would be one in which your TTW would fall somewhere in the middle of the weight distribution system's tongue weight capacity.

With a dry tongue weight of 755 lbs and a GVWR of about 7,500 lbs we can estimate that your TTW will be roughly 900 lbs. If so, the Strait-Line # RP66084 that you referenced would be a great choice and will be even if your TTW winds up in the 1,000 lbs - 1,100 lbs range. Please keep in mind this weight distribution system will require a hitch ball, either # A-90 for a 2" ball or # 19286 for a 2-5/16" ball.
