Question:

I have a 2005 Highlander on which I have a wheelchair lift. I need to replace my lift but have been told the weight capacity is not high enough for the combined weight of a 150 lb lift and a 300 lb chair. I’ve seen the receiver weight capacity quoted as 500 lb and 350 lb. Can you tell me the accurate receiver weight capacity and if it’s 350 lb, can that be upgraded?

The trailer hitches that we have available for your 2005 Toyota Highlander are the Curt # 13530 and the Draw-Tite # 75153 both of which have a 350 lb tongue weight capacity.

I took a look at the online version of the owner's manual (see page 312) for your Highlander and it looks like the towing weight capacity ranges between 1,500 lbs - 3,500 lbs depending on what engine you have and if you have the tow package or not. Since trailer hitches tend to have a tongue weight capacity that is 10% of the gross towing weight rating it would make sense that your max tongue weight would be 350 lbs.

Your best option for a 300 lb wheelchair would be to get a small trailer to carry it with as that will have a reduced tongue weight due to the axle of the trailer taking most of the weight.

For that you will need a ball mount, like the Curt # C45036, and some wiring for your trailer lights. I recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118413 if you don't have the tow package or part # 118248 if you do have the factory tow package.
