If you are using the 2-Wire Pigtail for Optronics Trailer Lights - 2-Prong PL-10 Plug - 10" Lead # A45CB with the Optronics # BUL72CB lights, then all 10 diodes should be lighting. If you are using the 3 wire pigtail # A47PB then you only need to connect the white and red or the black and white wires. The red or black wire should give you the full 10 diodes, where one of them would only give you the center 4. It sounds like the connections are to the wrong spot on your lights since you are getting the center 4. You will want to switch the colored wire to the other location.
To wire this light for backup, you will want to tap into your reverse light function on your trailer wiring or connect to the reverse light behind the tail lights in your vehicle.
