Question:
Im a bit confused by all the leaf spring choices! I have a 2005 Bri-Mar open car trailer CH16-7. It has duel axles, so it has 4 sets of 3 leaf springs. The GVWR is 7,000 lbs and the empty weight of the trailer is 1,660 lbs. I measured one of the springs and its about 26 long. I plan on replacing all the springs at once since 1 is broken and the rest are very rusty. I just dont know which ones to get. Also, as a preventative measure, can I use higher weight capacity springs? If so, which ones would work? Thanks!

Expert Reply:
For your 2005 Bri-Mar open trailer model CH16-7 with GVWR of 7,000 lbs I would recommend you get 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 3,500-lb Trailer Axles, part # e54SR.
These leaf springs are designed for use on trailers with 3,500 lb axles like what you should have on your trailer.
You should note that leaf springs have a tendency to stretch out over time, so the fact that these leaf springs are a little bit shorter than your current springs at 25-1/8 inches these would be the correct length. You should also note that these are sold individually, so you would need to order a total of 4 of these.
You would also not want to order leaf springs that are more capacity than you would need. These springs are not the only limiting factor for your trailer to carry more than its 7,000 lb capacity. If you were to go to heavier springs you would not increase your overall towing capacity, but you would increase the harshness of the ride of your trailer which would transfer to the whatever cargo you are hauling.
I attached an FAQ article below on trailer suspension for you to check out also.
