when welding spring hangers on a trailer , how far apart do you put them.

As a general rule, you will want the distance between the hangers on a leaf spring suspension system to be around a 1/2 inch shorter than the length of your leaf springs. This will allow for some movement with the shackle strap.

For example, if you have Double-Eye Springs like # SP-210275 that are 27 inches long, you will want to mount the hangers about 26-1/2 inches apart from each other.

What about on single axle suspension how far apart should the pair be welded from each other example on the outer beam or inside the frame some where?
