Can this item be purchased with a longer bar, say about 55 inches instead of 49? Thanks.

The correct Rhino-Rack crossbars that are confirmed to fit your 2004 Ford Ranger are the 49 inch ones that come with the Rhino-Rack bars # RRVA126B-2, 2500 Series Legs # RRRLKVA, and Fit Kit # DK191. The way that these specific crossbars are designed will not allow you to use a longer option due to the limited channel length on the bottom side of the crossbars.
For a Rhino-Rack roof rack option that will allow you to fit longer crossbars to it you will need to go with the 2500 Series Legs # RRRLKHD and Fit Kit # DK191. These will allow you to use the Heavy-Duty crossbars which have a channel on the bottom side that runs all the way through. This will allow you to use the 54 inch Heavy-Duty Crossbars # RB1375B-2.
You will want to be sure that the crossbars of your roof rack are not wider than the outside-to-outside measurement of the side mirrors on your Ranger.
