Does Location Matter When Using Hood Loops To Secure Kayak On 2011 Toyota Prius
Updated 06/28/2017 | Published 06/27/2017 >
Question:
I just want to make sure that using the Thule Quick Loops, which seem to depend only upon the hood locking mechanism of my 2011 Prius for security, would be sufficient for holding down the bow of a 14.5foot kayak. The rest of my setup is a Thule rack. Is a latched hood sufficient for a bow tiedown? I have used hood straps before, but the bolt down kind. For using these Quick Loops, does it matter where along the trunk rim you place them? My kayak is as long as the car, so its bow would be at least as forward as the front bumper.

As long as the Malone Hood Loops # MPG308 are in the trunk or hood cavity and away from anything moving or hot, they will hold the bow or stern of the kayak secure. These are made of a sturdy nylon webbing.
As far as where in the trunk or under the hood they are placed, as long as the tie-down can be cinched securely, the location would not really matter. I have attached a link to a video that shows the Hood Loops being used you can check out.
