Yakima and Thule Swinging Bike Rack Comparison to Use on a 2016 Ford Explorer

Published 06/24/2017

Question:

I have a 2016 Ford Explorer with a Curt Class III 2inch hitch. I am looking for a bike rack that swings and carries 4 bikes. Ive been looking at the Yakima Full swing vs Thule Apex swing. Not sure which is better. Dont want something so heavy I cant install it myself easily. What do you recommend?

All 4 of those options are great choices that will work with the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13386 on your 2016 Ford Explorer.

Since you said that you are not wanting something very heavy I will automatically rule out the Yakima FullSwing # Y02465 because it weighs 56 lbs.

The Thule Apex Swing # TH9027XT is a much lighter option that weighs in at 42 lbs. This bike rack includes anti-sway cradles, it can fold up, swing-away (obviously), and has a bike and rack locking features. It is a very solid choice that will get the job done.

Please note that if any of your bikes don't have a horizontal top tube then an adapter bar like part # TH982XT might be needed to ensure proper ground clearance.

I have included some review videos for you to check out as well.
