Recommended Transmission Cooler For Chevy Silverado 1500 With 4.8L Engine And Tow Package

Updated 05/25/2017 | Published 05/24/2017

Question:

I am towing a 3200 LB travel trailer, which most likely reaches 3500-3700 max. total weight once its loaded. I noticed on high grades nothing extreme, yet Temp. goes up to 230, then back to 210 once the grade is over. Should I be worried? Should I consider a tranny cooler?

Expert Reply:

The regular transmission temperature on your 2012 Chevy Silverado seems a little high and it is a concern it jumps that much with such a light trailer load without an extreme grade. I recommend you install a transmission cooler to bring this temp down for towing. The best transmission cooler for you is the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit w/Barb Inlets - Class III - Efficient # D13503. This cooler has furnace-brazed aluminum construction and 3/4 inch wide turbulator plats for more efficient cooling. You will want to use the Derale Snap-In Radiator Adapter Fitting for GM # D13035 which is a confirmed fit for your vehicle and engine. I've attached a video of a similar install for you.
