I would have to know which light you are trying to install to determine the wiring functions. Most trailers have the brake lights and turn signals combined on the same wire. So the likely functions of the 4 wires on the light are one for turn signal, one for brake lights, one wire for running lights, and one wire for ground. On the 3 wire systems, they combine the turn and brake light functions on one wire.
To determine the functions of the wires on the trailer you can use a circuit tester such as # PTW2993 to test each wire. Once you know the 4 functions, you can connect the 4 wires to the 3 wire tail lights. For an upgrade in product without a large change in style, I recommend the Optronics Waterproof, Over 80" LED Trailer Light Kit # TLL160RK.
