4-Pole to 5-Pole Wiring Adapter for Boat Trailer with Electric Reverse Lockout

Updated 03/23/2017 | Published 03/22/2017

Question:

I have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma and will be pulling a boat trailer that has surge brakes and a 5 pin flat connector. My truck currently has a 4 pin flat connector. What do I need to adapt my truck to the trailer? Thanks for the help!

All you need to adapt your Tacoma's 4-pole wiring for the 5-pole setup on your boat trailer is part # 20036. This adapter plugs in to your 4-pole and includes a separate wire for the trailer coupler's electric reverse lockout. All you need to do is attach the pigtail lead to one of the taillight wires that carries the reverse light signal. A circuit tester like # PTW2993 makes it easy to find the wire that carries that signal.

When you shift the Tacoma into reverse to back up the trailer the signal will activate the reverse lockout solenoid to prevent your surge brakes from engaging.
