Availability of Replacement Axles for a 91 Shadow Cruiser 5thWheel Travel Trailer
Updated 03/20/2017 | Published 03/17/2017 >
Question:
The above trailer has tandem Axles, 1 is fractured on the Passengers side. The exterior has been painted, didnt mask off federal ID sticker, cant determine GVWR. Previous owner cal is its rated at 3600#... No tags or markings on axle, it has Dexter 8-247 Brake drums on all 4 wheels. Axles are rubber torsion type with Hexagonal Beams, 3-cords inside, made by AL-KO. Grease Seal: # NAK, VB,1.719, 2.561, 0.500 Inner Bearing: Slovakia, LSB, LG 81149 Inner Bearing Race: Slovakia, LSB, LG8111 Outer Bearing: SK, CHINA, L44649 Outer Bearing Race: SK, CHINA, L44610, LYC These I assume are 3500# bearings, why is there 7000# total tandem axles under a light weight 5th wheel 21 foot long...? I mean light weight, they were designed to be pulled by Light trucks like a Ford Ranger or F150, Chevy Silverados.... The Brakes drum are 10inch diameter, and use 10inch x 2.25inch brake shoes with the Dexter 8-247 drum... is this not over-kill..? Or could there be smaller capacity axles with over-weigh capacity on this 5th wheel..? Im lost, I need to replace both axles, cant determine axle weight capacity....

Expert Reply:
The Timbren Axle-Less Suspension, like # A35RS545E will be the best option in changing out your trailers axles. Unfortunately, we do not carry torsion style axles.
The bearings that you supplied shows that your axles look to be rated at 3,500 lbs for each axle.
The Timbren Axles will bolt on to your trailer frame and will include hub/drum and electric brake assemblies. On some applications an additional cross member may need to be required to reinforce the axles to the trailer's frame.
The Timbren axles will give you tandem axles with independent suspension on your trailer. The Aeon rubber springs will help absorb road shock and will help support your trailer's load.
