Yes, a mounting base is necessary for the # MCL63AB, you will need to use either the Black Bracket and Single Wire Plug, item # A65PB, or the Chrome Bracket and Single Wire Plug, item # A67CB with this light.
The # MCL75AB, Thin Line Trailer lights also require a mounting base. Brackets for the # MCL75AB include the # A65PB and the # A67CB bases, mentioned for the # MCL63AB light.
