Question:

I have been having problems with my horse trailer tires. It is a dual axle trailer with 4 tires. The trailer weighs 4500 # and the weight of the horses I haul is about 3300# plus some extraneous stuff. The total weight of the trailer loaded is about 8500#. Right now I have Power King Towmax tires 235/85R16 which have an E load rating of 3640# single/3305/# dual @ 80 PSI. The tires are not old, the trailer is kept under cover in a pole barn with a concrete floor and driven regularly and the tires are checked before each trip. I have had 2 blow-outs within 6 months-different tires on different sides of the vehicle. There is no uneven tread wear and I have not hit anything to my knowledge. The tires both blew out the same way on the tread, not the sidewall. I talked to a tire and wheel store and they told me that I need a higher load capacity tire if the tire is blowing out the tread. Is that correct that my current tires do not have enough load capacity?

Looking at your tires, it looks like the middle tread is a little more worn than the rest of the tire. That suggests that your tires are overheating. It can be from overinflating, axle nut being too tight, brakes needing adjustment because they are too tight, etc. The most likely culprit is speed as many trailer tires are only rated for a max speed of 65 mph so traveling faster could cause overheating and tread wear. You seem to be funtioning in your load capacity, so stronger tires with higher speed rating is the route I would go to protect yourself and the horses.

My recommendation is the Taskmaster Provider ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range G, # TTWPRG235R16. This tire has a 4080 lb single and 3640 dual load capacity at 110 psi. It has a 14 ply rating and superior siping to allow heat to dissipate faster.
