Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Upgrade for 235/75-15 Tires on a Travel Trailer
Ideally, you'll want the combined capacity of your tires to meet or exceed the GVWR of your trailer. If your unloaded trailer weight is 5000 lbs and the combined load capacity of your tires is 5820 lbs, you've only got about 800 lbs of remaining tire capacity for your gear/water/propane, which would explain why you're concerned about blowouts. Your current tires sound like they're not rated high enough. We don't offer a 15 inch tire that's rated higher than what you currently have,...

  • Availability of 16 Wheel to Fit 5.2K Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly with 6 on 5-1/2 Pattern
Yes, we have a variety of wheels and tire/wheel combos for 16" wheels that are compatible with the 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern of the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 8-213-5UC1. For a combination tire mounted on the wheel you could go with The Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Tire w 16" White Spoke Wheel # AM32764. . The white spoke wheel is a little plain but it is pretty common for trailers. If you'd like something else then I have attached a link with our selection that you can filter through.

  • Wheel/Tire and Hub that Fits Timbren Axle Less 5,200 lb Axle Kit
Hey Matt, so it looks like the items you added to your cart are the Timbren Axle Less Kit part # TASR5200S03, Karrier Wheel and Tire part # AM32764, and the wheel part # AM20746. I could be looking at an outdated history of what you have in your cart right now but it does seem like you are missing a hub for the Timbren and wheels to attach to so for that you'd also need the # 8-213-5UC1.

  • Replacement Wheel for a Dexstar Part Number 17-243
The wheel you are looking for is our part number # AM20741. This is a 16 inch rim with a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern with a 3,050 lb capacity per wheel. For this wheel with a ST235/85R16 tire mounted you would want the part # AM32764.

  • Reasons for Trailer Tire Failures
Tire failure is usually caused by a few things. It can be from overloading the trailer, improper tire inflation, and/or exceeding the speed rating for the tire. You should verify that the tire capacity you have for you trailer is adequate for how much your trailer weighs. The weight capacity for the tire will be listed on the sidewall of the tire. The highest rated tire we offer in the 205/75R14 size has a 2,100 lb capacity, so if you have tandem axle trailer you would not have enough...

  • Can 16 Wheels be Used to Replace 15 Wheels on 18 Haul King Trailer
As long as you have enough room for the larger wheel/tire combo you can definitely use larger tires. This includes wheel well clearance (we recommend at least 4") and tire to frame clearance (we recommend at least 2"). I don't believe that there are 225/75-16 size tires so the closest size tire to your current 225/75-15 is 235/80-16. For this size I recommend the Kendra ST235/80R16 Radial Tire w 16" White Spoke Wheel # AM32764 which has a 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern, has a Load Range E (3,420...

  • Can Trailer Tire Size ST225/75-15 be Upgraded to ST235/80-16
The larger tire size 235/80-16 will be right at 2-1/2 inches taller in diameter than the current size you have of 225/75-15. If you have the needed clearance for that there's no reason you couldn't upgrade to the larger size. If you have an 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern you'd need the # TTWA16RGWSHD or if you have a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern you'd want the part # AM32764.

The standard offset for trailer wheels is zero to keep the load on the trailer centered on the tire. Your 225R-75-15 is approximately 28.3 inches in height and will be 10 millimeters, .39 inches, thinner than the ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire. I would recommend staying with...

  • Recommended Tires and Wheels to Replace 8.75 x 16.5 Trailer Tires
To replace the 8.75 x 16.5 tires on your trailer, I recommend going with an ST235/85R16 size, which will be the closest to what you have but on a 16 inch wheel. The lowest load rating we have available for this size is a Load Range E. If the hubs on your trailer have an 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern, I recommend the Kenda Karrier Radial Trailer Tire with 16 Inch White Wheel # AM32739. If your hubs instead have a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern, then you will want the Kenda Karrier tire and...

  • Can 225/75-15 be Replaced with 235/85-16 Size Tire on Trailer
The overall diameter with a 235/85-16 will be 3.2 inches taller than a 225/75-15. Since the additional diameter is split on either side of the hub that means you would have 1.6 inches less fender clearance. The width difference would be one centimeter. If you have an 8 lug wheel you would want the part # TTWA16RGWSHD which comes with a tire rated for 81 mph or if you have a 6 lug wheel you would want the part # AM32764.

The highest capacity 16 inch combo that we have is going to be # TA76FR rated for 4,400 pounds at 110 psi. Looking at your tires, it looks like the middle tread is a little more worn than the rest of the tire. That suggests that your tires are overheating. It can be from overinflating, axle nut being too tight, brakes needing adjustment because they are too tight, etc. The most likely culprit is speed as many trailer tires are only rated for a max speed of 65 mph so traveling faster could cause overheating and tread wear. You seem to be funtioning in your load capacity, so stronger tires...

Based on the gross trailer weight at 6,000 pounds, if it is a single axle it likely takes 235/80-16 or 235/85-16 tires. If it has 2 axles then they are likely 14 or 15 inch tires.
