Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I was amazed a the fast delivery from etrailer. The two tires arrived within 3 days and in great condition. I was expecting the tires to take much longer so I was pleasantly surprised. The tires and wheels look great. I will be using them only as spares for our trailers but they definitely look better than what's on there now. The price was very competitive with other places, if not better than most. The free delivery was great. Thanks

I received four wheels/tires two days after ordering and immediately mounted them on my old fertilizer spreader that I now use as a diesel fuel nurse trailer. Great service and fast delivery! I'm looking forward to pulling my trailer down the road at highway speeds; my old farm implement tires restricted me to 25mph!

Review from a similar Karrier Steel in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I ordered these to place on my boat trailer. I used them on my 2012 Trailstar trailer which carries my Tracker bass boat. It had load range C tires. I wanted to upgrade my tires and this item was exactly what I wanted. These fit perfectly. The tires were “fresh”....meaning that they were made only a months ago. The finish on the rims was much better than I was expecting. The welds on the back side of the rims looks to me to be quality work.

It’s been a year and I have absolutely no complaints. I would definitely purchase these again.

Review from a similar Karrier Steel in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I received the order on time. The tires were not damaged. I took the tires to get them balanced and things balanced out well. The tires were as described. My first impression was that the tread wasn’t very deep. The old tires I removed had deeper tread. The old tires were light truck tires and the new tires were trailer tires so that may explain why there is a difference. The trailer has been on a couple trips and we haven’t had any problems yet. I put them on my fifth wheel and it is around 12k dry and loaded around 14k. From what I can tell, these are an affordable replacement if you have old tires and rims and need a replacement.

Review from a similar Karrier Steel in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I purchased Loadstar 5.30 12 Bias Trailer Tire 5 on 4 1/2 Load Range C . I failed to notice that it was a Bias Ply which only has a Load Range C at 65 mph. I got back with etrailer for a refund and replace them with a 175 13 Radial that has a Load Range D at 81 mph . It was a hassle free Exchange. Of course they deducted shipping on my refund. Make sure that's the item you want it will save you on shipping cost on your return. Overall I'm very happy with the Tires and rims and they fit perfectly. Very good customer service. I received them in three days. I would recommend this company. 5

I needed a spare tire for my yacht club trailer, it was an odd size and you guys had it right in line as I browsed down the wheel sizes on your site, including shipping I got it cheaper than going to the local Marine dealer. Now I need summer to get here.

Needed a spare since purchase of boat, many different tire a d rim sizes on trailers, found the correct one on your site, hole pattern and dimensions were right on.

Review from a similar Karrier Steel in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Great products and very good prices on quality tire. Quick shipment and boxed very nicely. Fit on trailer hub perfectly. Videos really helped me measure hub lugs and explain ply difference and load range differences. I have a better product which will haul more. I will be buying a hitch and wiring for another car and the videos show me how easy it is to install. Companies around here want up to $400.00 to install. Thanks for the service will be back

Comments
The tires are perfect on my trailer. Hardly ever lose air and so trilled to have good rubber when I go across town. Really easy process on buying tires with a rim. No waiting at store installer and helped me learn to change my own tire. I tell people even lately about this business and how wonderful the experience has been. I used to have a raggedy $150.00 yard trailer someone built and neighbors would borrow until last neighbor called and told me he arrived with only the hitch clasp. Bought me a good trailer later and updated the wheels and tires and don’t worry about accidents so much when pulling a load. Thanks for helping me improve my responsibilities towards others on the road

Review from a similar Karrier Steel in Trailer Tires and Wheels

The tire and wheel assemblies look good. I haven’t pulled the trailer yet so this isn’t an in-use review. I couldn’t give them 5 stars because one of the assemblies needed 4 1/2 ounces of wheel weights to balance. To those of you that would argue they don’t require balancing I say this...if it rotates, if it spins it needs to be balanced! Great prices, excellent shipping services. You can’t go wrong.

Comments
Have 6000 miles on these tires now and they are wearing and riding well. I tow at 70 MPH so I balanced the tire and wheel assemblies when new.

Tires & rims arrived the next day after placing the order the night before. I was actually caught off guard as I did not expect them to arrive till Monday. Installed them on the trailer later that day. No surprises and they fit perfectly. Old tires were cracked and the rims were in bad shape. New wheels look great !! Very pleased.

Review from a similar Karrier Steel in Trailer Tires and Wheels

If you're on the fence, just buy them! I got these to replace the bias 4.80-12 tires that came with the trailer. These are light years better. They have a modern automotive style tread, plus they are M speed (81MPH) rated! The gloss black wheels look cool too. They have a much wider and flatter contact pattern with the ground, and while slightly larger diameter, they fit the stock 12" wheel fender perfectly. I've got a lot more peace of mind towing my utility trailer at highway speeds now.

The tires are a great upgrade to the standard "Carry On" trailer tire. Made a few modifications to the fender well and the results were what I was looking for. We've have taken my homemade square-drop camper out a few times now and rides really well.

  • Trailer Tire and Aluminum Wheel Recommendation for an Aluminum Utility Trailer
First, the P235/75R15 tire is a passenger tire and really is not the best choice for a trailer. I would recommend going with a ST225/75D15, ST rated trailer tire with a 6 inch aluminum wheel like the Kenda Tires and Aluminum Wheel, # AM3S874, with 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. • Changing 235/85-R15 Tires to 235/85R-16 on 24ft Trailer
The ST235/85-R15 tire would be about 3-1/8 inches in diameter larger. This will move your tire just a bit more than 1-1/2 inches closer to the inside of your fender. As a general rule of thumb, you will want about 3 inches of clearance between the tire and the underside of the fender when the trailer is fully loaded. If you can maintain that clearance with the larger tires, stepping up to the larger size will work just fine for you.

Provided that you have enough space around the tire for a larger size, and you understand that the axle rating remains the same (the larger tire does not allow you to carry more weight) you can change to a larger size. However, you also have to consider that the tire will be taller. This will raise the center of gravity of the trailer and can lead to sway problems. Another thing you may be able to do is stay with the same tire size but move up to a higher load range rating within that...

I attached a chart that shows what sizes are compatible with different rim widths to help you pick out which tire you will need. The size 7.00-15LT that you listed is a size tire for a 15 inch rim. It sounds like you have a 15 inch wheel and you would need a tire for a 15 inch rim. I would recommend...

  • How to Pick Out Replacement Wheels/Tires for a Gooseneck Trailer
To pick out rims for your trailer you will first want to determine what bolt pattern wheel you have on your trailer so that you can get the correct one that will bolt up to the trailer. You will likely not be able to match up the bolt pattern between the trailer wheels and the Toyota wheels. Vehicle wheels also often have an offset whereas...

  • Can 225/75-15 be Replaced with 235/85-16 Size Tire on Trailer
The overall diameter with a 235/85-16 will be 3.2 inches taller than a 225/75-15. Since the additional diameter is split on either side of the hub that means you would have 1.6 inches less fender clearance. The width difference would be one centimeter. If you have an 8 lug wheel you would want the part # TTWA16RGWSHD which comes with a tire rated for 81 mph or if you have a 6 lug wheel you would want the part # AM32764.

  • Spring Hanger Spacing Dimensions for a Tandem Axle Slipper Spring Suspension on a 14,0000 lb Trailer
The hanger spacing for a tandem axle trailer suspension setup can be determined, but you need to take into account the axle spacing needed for the overall diameter of your wheel and tire combination and the springs you will be using.
