Using Surge or Electric Brakes with A Weight Distribution Hitch

Question:

I am looking at equalizer hitches. Some claim to be surge brake compatible others do not. What is the difference?

The main difference between weight distribution that are compatible with surge brakes and systems that are not is the design of the the spring bars. The Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37100ET has straight spring bars that are designed to move back and forth in the frame clamps. These bars allow enough movement in the hitch to correctly activate a surge brake coupler.

Typically, the chain and cam design weight distribution systems, like the Reese Strait-Line System # RP66084, will not work with surge brakes due to the lack of enough horizontal movement to completely activate the surge brake coupler. In these cases, only electric brakes can be used with these types of weight distribution systems.

The picture that I included shows the Equal-i-zer spring bar design. You can see how the bar has the ability to move back and forth if needed within the bracket of the weight distribution sytem's trailer mounitng bracket.
