Question:

Morning. I had an old camper left on my property that I repurposed as a utility trailer. The hubs are Dexter 7inch x 1.25inch brakes. The wheels are 20.5x8x10 with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern. Id like to get rid of the dexter brakes and replace with a hub thatll take a more common tire, maybe a 5 lug. The bearings are L44649 inner and outer. What are my options?

Your size 20.5x8-10 tire is the old way of expressing tire sizing. Tire sizing has since been converted to metric and the equivalent tire size to your existing tire is 205/65-10, which really isn't uncommon. The Kenda # AM3H460 would work for your trailer and has a load range E capacity of 1,650 lbs. at 90 psi.

There really isn't an advantage going to a 5 lug hub. The maximum load range for your current tire size is E. The next larger sized tire that will give you the option of an E rated tire is a 145/80-12, and that will still only be rated for 1,520 lbs. Lower than your current max. You would also have to worry about clearance issues going with a larger diameter size.

If you would just rather have 5 lug hubs a great option are the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K. These are a 5 on 4-1/2, 7 inch hubs for E-Z Lube axles. The assembly comes with all the races, seals, and bearings to fit. For tires and wheels the Kenda # AM3H480 will still use the same 205/65-10 tire size you currently have. That way you won't have to worry about losing weight capacity or clearance issues.

For similar hubs that are 4 on 4 if you need new hubs and want to keep the same bolt pattern # 8-173-16UC3-EZ will work for you.

Either way you go, for brakes you can use # AKEBRK-2L for the left and # AKEBRK-2R for the right.
