As you have probably found, the brake switch on your 2011 Subaru Outback has several wires running to and from it. You will need to find the wire on the cold side of the switch that carries a signal ONLY when the brake pedal is pressed. Wire color can vary from vehicle to vehicle, so I cannot provide a specific color for this wire. You will need to use a circuit tester, like # PTW2993, to find it.
Just probe the wires by first connecting the alligator clip to a suitable ground and run the pointed end of the tester into the wire. It will penetrate the outer shielding of the wire to reach the metal itself. If any current passes along the wire, it will light up the tester. Probe the wires until you find the one that carries a signal only when the brake pedal is pressed. The wire should not show a signal at any other time. Once you find that wire, attach the red wire from the Tekonsha PRIMUS IQ Electronic Brake Controller, # TK90160, to it. I have included a link to the installation details below for reference and a video that shows the circuit tester in use at about the 2 minute, 55 second mark.
