Question:

One of the 2 springs in my Reese DrawTite 16K hitch head came off. I cannot figure out where or how to replace it. I did not find any other parts in the bed of my truck, just the approximately 7 inch long spring. Do I need to order additional parts to reconnect this spring? Is there a manual available for the install?

Usually, these springs should not have to be replaced unless they are damaged. You will want to check the Reese Replacement Spring, # 30776, and make sure it is not damaged and check the Reese 16K Fifth Wheel Hitch, # RP30047, to make sure that there is no other damage to the hitch.

The springs are located in the head assembly. One goes from one side of the hitch jaws to the other side. The long side of the spring (hook furthest from the coils) attaches to a pivot point on the flat rod closest to the jaws. The spring then goes across to the other side of the jaws and attaches to a point just beyond the jaws (close to where the other springs attaches). The other spring has one end attached to the handle from the back of the hitch to the front of the hitch away from the jaws.

After unsuccessfully trying to replace one spring on my 1500 hitch, by laying on my back in the pickup bed, it dawned on me to take whole head assembly out. Just pull pins at the roller points on each side. That way all I had to do was turn the head assembly over and gained easy access to where the spring attached. Might be common knowledge but not for me. Hope this might help someone.
