There are a couple of options for adding trailer wiring to your 2010 Volkswagen Tiguan.
First, you can use the Curt Powered Converter, # C59236. I have included links to the installation details and a video of an installation below.
Another option that will not require you to cut or splice into your vehicle's factory tail light wiring is the Tekonsha ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness # 119250KIT. This system keeps the 4-Way wiring harness separate from your vehicle's factory wiring so there is no feedback, interference, or power draw on your vehicle's wiring system. For your Tiguan, this harness will install using the BT wiring code instructions, which are linked for you.
Your Tiguan has a 3 wire system. A 3 wire system will have amber turn signals and separate bulbs for stop and turn signals (both red). Some vehicles combine stop and tail light functions onto 1 circuit. These vehicles will require that you attach the trailer light power module red stop wire to that same circuit on the vehicle and then ground the brown tail light circuit.
Some vehicles combine stop and tail light functions onto 1 circuit and then also have an additional tail light function wire that is independent of the stop. These vehicles will require that you attach the trailer light power module red stop wire to the same combined circuit on the vehicle and then attach the brown tail light circuit to the independent circuit on the vehicle.
