Why Would Curt Hitch 31109 Seem to Be too Narrow to Install on Truck
Updated 05/17/2016 | Published 05/14/2016 >
Question:
I have a 2008 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4x4. Ordered 31109 and went to install but have noticed that the hitch has about about .25inch gap between hitch and frame when snug against the other side. Instructions make no mention of needing spacer washers and the included bolts arent really long enough to use spacers anyways. Whats the deal? Did I order the wrong hitch or am I missing something?

Sometimes hitches can get slightly bent during shipping and this can be fixed by bending the hitch back into place as long as the hitch only has a slight bend to it. If yours isn't lining up I can almost guarantee that is what happened. Some people will use open steps for leverage, vices and even car jacks to apply controlled force to bend the hitch back.
You will want to look for flaking paint and physical stress marks on the hitch before and after you attempt to bend the hitch back. If you see any of those signs on the hitch you should not use the hitch on your vehicle as it has been fatigued to the point of not being safe to use.
The other possibility is that the vehicle was involved in an accident and the frame is bent. I am sure you would have mentioned that though.
This hitch is confirmed as a fit for your 2008 GMC Sierra 2500 though so you did order the correct part number.
