Rear Fascia Removal for Hitch Installation on New Body 2016 Chevy Malibu

Updated 05/13/2016 | Published 05/11/2016

Question:

Greetings from Myrtle Beach! I have a 2016 Malibu LT new body style, not a Malibu Limited. Im a retired tech, but not body tech. I see that the rear fascia has to be removed to install the hitch, my question is after the listed bolts and screws are removed, does the fascia slide off or..? I see the slots in the photo but Im not sure of what they attach too. Would you perhaps have an installation video or photos of what Ill find there? My wife is selling her Ford Escape so my Malibu is going to be my small utility trailer hauler. Thanking you in advance for the assistance

On your 2016 Chevy Malibu the fascia will need to be pulled off once all the fasteners are removed because it is still sort of compression fit in with the adjoining body panels. Once removed what you will see is some of the skeletal parts of the vehicle. Specifically you will be working in the area of the steel bumper beam at the rear of the vehicle. The instructions which I have linked for you have some good pictures.

Since you will be doing some towing the recommended ball mount is # 36071. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2 inch ball use # 19258. And for trailer wiring I recommend the ZCI harness # 119250KIT because with it you will not have to splice into the wiring on your new Malibu. It has connectors that clamp around the tail light wires and sense the current flowing through them.
