I have a much easier solution for installing a 4-way on your 1988 Chevy Silverado 1500. What you would want would be the part # C55315. This plugs inline with the taillight connector on your truck and does not require any hardwiring.
Otherwise you would need to test the wiring of your truck taillights with a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to wire the 4-way you currently have to it. White wire would get grounded, brown wire runs to the wire that comes on with the running/head lights, the yellow wire is the left turn/brake signal and the green wire goes to the right turn stop signal.
