Should Fuse be Installed on Power Wire when Hardwiring Brake Controller on 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Question:
I recently installed a Primus controller in a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee after installing the Mopar 7-Plug adapter kit and noticed that the Primus installation instructions made no mention of a fuse between the battery and the controller. On the side of caution I plan to add one in and this is a single axle trailer with 10inch Dexter brakes. Why do you think a fuse is not recommended and what size fuse if any would you recommend.

It all depends on how the brake controller is installed. On vehicles that have a factory tow package that includes a plug or port to plug in a brake controller the circuit does have a fuse. If a brake controller has to be hardwired in then you would run the power wire to the positive battery terminal via a 30 amp circuit breaker # PK54530. But you could use an in line fuse instead if you wanted to.
The instructions for the Primus brake controller # TK90160 mention to follow the generic wiring guide if not using a factory tow package connection. The generic wiring guide would have the specifics on using breakers.
