Determining Proper Trailer Ball Height for Weight Distribution System

Question:

Interested in purchasing Curt Weight Distribution System with Shank - Trunnion Bar - 5,000 lbs GTW 500 lbs TW. My question is what is your return policy? I see that it can be adjusted to up to a 2 inch , but Im not certain that will be enough until I actually fit the device onto my trailer and hook it up to my van. Can I return it if the isnt enough?

You can return it, you can see our returns policy by clicking the provided link. However, you won't need to worry about that if you choose the correct product to begin with, and I can help you do that.

To choose a weight distribution system, you'll need to first determine the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer. To that figure, add the weight of any gear stowed in the cargo area of the SUV or truck bed behind the rear axle. I've linked to an FAQ article that explains how to do this. These combined figures represent the Total Tongue Weight (TTW) of your set-up. The TTW of your trailer should fall as close as possible to the middle of the effective range of the weight distribution system you choose. For instance, the Equal-i-zer system, part # EQ37060ET, works best for trailers with a tongue weight ranging from 200-600 lbs.

To figure out the amount of drop/rise you'll need the shank to provide, take a look at the ballmount FAQ link I've provided. The procedure for determining the correct ballmount height and correct shank height is pretty much identical. The only difference is that with the weight distribution shank, you'll want the ball to sit about 1 inch above level to account for any vehicle rear suspension squat.
