How to Find the Towing Capacity of a 2014 Ram 2500 Mega Cab

Updated 02/25/2016 | Published 02/24/2016

Question:

Looking for the largest enclosed trailer I can pull safely with 2014 2500 mega cab diesel ram. Will be pulled daily on back roads 100 miles per day. It will be used for construction job so the load with not be very heavy, just tools and materials. Would like to get 30ft by 8.5 ft, but also dont want to stress the truck to much. Does this sound possible?

You are going to want to check a few things prior to purchasing a trailer to tow with your 2014 Ram 2500 diesel. First, check the capacity on the trailer hitch. There should be a sticker on the hitch or the capacity will be in the owner's manual or supplemental literature that came with the truck.

Then check the capacity of the truck. There are so many configurations of trucks, each with a different towing capacity so be sure you are looking at the right specs. You can also check the sticker in the door jamb of the truck. If you subtract the gross vehicle weight rating from the gross COMBINED weight rating that will tell you the towing capacity of the truck.

Whichever ends up being lower, the truck or the hitch, is the capacity you need to go by.

The official Ram document that lists the towing capacities (and other capacities) of all configurations of the 2014 Ram 2500 is 30 pages long. Mega Cab models range between 10,450 pounds to 17,090 pounds gross trailer weight capacity. To determine exactly what yours is I would need to know if it is a 2 or 4 wheel drive, bed length, with or without Ram Boxes, rear end ratio, transmission type, and trim level (Laramie, Longhorn, and so on).
