Do you recommend adding a backing plate when attaching these to a steel deck equipment trailer?

As long at you have the appropriate size bolts and hardware for the D-Ring Tie Down Anchor # RR06 you will not need the backing plate. The backing plate # BP06 wouldn't offer your D-ring anymore support than the steel frame itself would, but it could come in handy as a nice template for drilling the holes in your equipment trailer.
